Right under food, stories are my favourite thing. I love plays, books, television and of course… movies.
My favourite movies don’t have much to do with food (though I have seen quite a few good ones that do), but they normally do have at least one scene that takes place while eating, making or serving something delicious.
Of course there are the iconic moments that pop into everyone’s head:
- The Katz’s Deli scene from when Harry Met Sally
- The opening diner scene from Reservoir Dogs
- Gremlins eating after midnight
- And anything Slimer was munching on during Ghostbusters
- When Clark Griswold cuts into that dry as dust Turkey in Christmas Vacation
Then there are the more obscure ones, but still really stand out moments in wonderful movies:
- The dinner scene in Pan’s Labyrinth
- The moment when the food critic tries Remy’s Ratatouille
- The dancing in the grocery store in The Fantastic Mr. Fox
- When Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond have a picnic on the beach in Sabrina (one of my favourite girlie movies)
And of course this gem from Pulp Fiction:
What’s your favourite food / movie moment??

Tarintino often uses food – since he loves dialogue so much. I think to the opening scene in Inglorious Basterds where he has a conversation with the French man hiding the jewish people… asking for milk and sitting there casually drinking it is used to make the conversation seem a lot more peaceful than it is, and to perhaps show how masterful Landa is. Pretty fun.
The other scene that immediately came to mind was from the The Matrix, where the man betrays Morpheus/etc to Agent Smith. They are sitting in a posh restaurant and he is telling Agent Smith how he wants to be plugged in and not remember anything – uttering “Ignorance is bliss” as he takes a bite of a super juicy steak. Food is the luxury to contrast his life of war and suffering.
Anyways, fun topic.

Ah, the Griswolds! One of my top scenes. Others:
1. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
a) Brad Hamilton “I shall serve no fries before their time.”
b) Jeff Spicoli to Mr. Hand: Learning about Cuba, and having some food. (after having pizza delivered to the class).
2. Pretty Woman
Vivian Ward tries to get the snail out of the shell in a posh restaurant and sends it flying. “Oops! Slippery little suckers.”
3. While not exactly a movie, let’s not forget the Mr. Bean Christmas special where he ends up with his head inside the cooked turkey
