One of my bucket list items was to spend time in 3 neighbourhoods in Ottawa that I don’t usually visit. And of course they needed to be chock full of great food.

Living in lower town, so close to the ByWard Market, I’m rarely in the Glebe. For some reason or another, I decided to rectify this during the Easter weekend when we were having that nasty April Fool’s winter storm. It is really saying something that I had a great time out in that weather. I hate being cold, more than I hate raw onion.

Here are some photos from my adventure – I’m looking forward to coming back when I don’t have to rush into stores just to escape the wind. Also because I need to spend time in Cats R Us. Seriously a boutique of all things cats?? I’m a dog person and I still need to check this out.

I know today feels like Saturday… but it’s not. Sorry. Bubble burst I’m sure. But no worries! Here is a round up of the Culinary Word A Day’s from this week!!

Cappelletti – small triangular hat shaped dough filled with meat or cheese.

Lox -  smoked salmon, usually brine, salt or sugar cured. Normally eaten with bagels and cream cheese.

Sour Cream – cream that has been deliberately fermented with bacteria in lactic acid.

Cutlet – a thin, tender cut of meat taken from the leg or rib section of the animal. Usually flattened and breaded.

Shad – A fish of the herring family that spends much of its life in the sea, typically entering rivers to spawn.

Rind – the hard / tough covering or skin on fruits such as oranges and melons. Once removed it is called the peel.

Coulis - a thin sauce os strained, pureed raw or cooked vegetables or fruit. Used as a flavourful garnish.

Everyone should have a happy place. A real place. Not just that meadow in your mind that you try to go to before you blow a gasket and yell at the person who may have been pissing you off, or may just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

For me, that place is Prince Edward County. I grew up near the area but it wasn’t until I had moved away that I realized just how much I loved it. Which is probably for the best. If I had known then how much I loved it I probably never would have left… then I would need a new happy place. I don’t think you can live in your happy place – the real world will eventually find you there.

I once again attempted to enjoy blue cheese at the Agrarain. Still not loving it – but the waffles with caramel sauce, yes please!

Just a few hours away, on Lake Ontario – Prince Edward County is filled to the brim (though there is always room for more) with fantastic wineries, restaurants, artists and artisan food makers. And that is just the beginning.

My latest trip was just a couple weekends ago with some of my favourite bloggers and some new ones I was meeting for the first time. It reminded me of 5 simple truths of the County:

1. Everyone who lives there is the nicest person you have ever met in your life. Seriously, they made me look grizzled and prickly by comparison.

Even the babies are sweeter in the County. Well … this one was brought in special with the Seed to Sausage goodies!

2. There is damn good wine in the county. I don’t know anything about wine beyond what I like and what I don’t. And for the most part, you could drink these wines out of a boot and it would still be delicious. But really… get yourself a glass.

This time around we were treated to wines from Sandbanks, Norman Hardie, Karlo Estates, Rosehall Run and Waupoos

3. It is a real community. People know each other. They support each other. And they promote each other. There are no competitors – just different varieties of amazing county offerings.

4. The air is cleaner, the food is tastier and the beer, wine and spirits have you feeling no pain faster than anywhere else.*
*According to my not at all scientific and 100% bias research.

5. The beds you find at these amazing B&B’s and Inns are made out of clouds, marshmallows and unicorn hair. I tried to ask the amazing staff at Angeline’s Inn where they got their unicorn hair, but they stared at me like I was insane. But, you know, in a nice way.

I adore PEC. And cannot speak highly enough about it. You should go. And you should take me with you. Or at the very least bring me back some wine! And maybe a few treats from the Marshmallow Room.

You know why I love Facebook? Because it is like having a team of people searching the internet for you and then posting all the best stuff. The best looking recipes, the luckiest chain letters and the funniest jokes. Ok… that’s not always true. But if you sift amongst the rocks there is gold in them there hills!!  I mean… that there news feed.

My friend Amanda posted a link to making your own deodorant. I had the same reaction that I bet you are having right now. It sounded something like “Pfft… that is some pretty hippie shit right there.” Well I was wrong and so were you. Actually… we were both pretty bang on but just because it is hard core hippie doesn’t mean it doesn’t rock the proverbial casbah.

It just so happens that I have very sensitive skin. I’m also super accident prone – so when I had cut my under arm (yes that’s right… I cut it)  I found that regular deodorants burned and stung like a mother cuss-er. I was pretty quick to beg Amanda for a sample.

Do you know what clove and orange smells like?? Juicy Fruit gum. Oh hell yes.

Made from essential oils, house hold baking supplies and coconut oil – not only does it smell amazing, is natural and didn’t sting – it is also fully customizable!! Oh yes. For every time I have turned to someone and said “I wish I smelled just like this ______” insert yummy smell here. Usually it is wine, bacon or popcorn. Just swap out the orange and clove oil below for your prefered scent.

So I made some! And with it a bit of a change in the recipe for a better texture. So use up your old stuff – keep the container (you can just pour this right in and it will set up like a regular stick of deodorant). But you might want to have some regular stuff on hand because this recipe is the exact opposite of “no white residue”. Sorry little black dress. But it does last all day and even through my yoga sessions.

Homemade Deodorant – Smell Like Candy

Ingredients
10 drops Oregano Oil (this is the bacteria fighter… you need this. I know you may not like the smell but you wont notice when you are done)
25 drops Orange Oil
10 drops Clove Oil
4-5 TBSP coconut oil
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup corn starch

In a big bowl whisk all the ingredients together until combined. Should be the consistency of thick cake batter. Pour into your container and start smelling great!

And now, because you know it is in your head. The Clash -

Ok… so this week was a bit of a struggle! The weekend was spent in beautiful Prince Edward County (one hell of a post to come… scratch that… I don’t want you to have really high expectations. A pretty decent… a respectable… a post to come!! ) where I completely forgot about the world outside the county and forgot to post my Culinary Word A Day’s. But I’m all caught up now and here they are – culinary terms that might be new to you, some of them are to me! Hominy?? What??

Grappa – an Italian brandy made from the fermented residue of grapes that have been pressed while wine making.

Snickerdoodle – a sugar cookie with a cracked surface made with cream of tartar and rolled in cinnamon sugar.

Cheshire – a mild yellow cow’s milk cheese with a crumbly texture from Cheshire England. It’s particular taste comes from salt deposits in the pasture where the cows graze.

Jimmies – see Sprinkles.

Peach Melba – dessert of peach halves with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. Created by French Chef Escoffier.

Hominy – hulled yellow or white corn with the bran and germ removed. Most often coarsely ground and boiled with water or milk to make grits.

Timbale – a mix of poultry, seafood, veggies and noodles in cream sauce that is baked in a drum shaped mold of the same name.

Food fun that is better than work on a Friday afternoon –

This isn’t quite food related unless you count the pot brownies.

The kick ass Bethany from Second Ferment talks about the wines of Prince Edward County during our Indulge PEC trip – happy to know there are responsible bloggers who took notes and stuff. I, on the other hand, have a “woo spring break” style of writing.

Jamie McDonald is a competitive eater who is devouring Chicago’s food challenges one plate and stomach ache at a time!

One of my favourite all time jokes:

The funny thing about these cookies is that they never actually made it to the intended recipient.

Remember when I had said that I was making cookies as part of a 2013 creative ‘Pay it Forward’? (If you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, catch yourself up here. Don’t worry I’ll be here when you get back.) Well these ginger snaps were made for my friend Katy. In my head I was 150% certain that she was going to be at a dinner party mutual friends were having. Turns out Katy was 151% certain that she was going to New York City for the weekend.

So… the cookies were made, they were photographed, eaten and enjoyed. Katy simply had no part in any of that. *Note to Katy - I do promise to get you a cookie at some point. It may even be a ginger cookie and be made by me. It could also be a single Oreo that I hand you and then proceed to eat the rest of the bag by myself. In one sitting. While you watch. *

Incase Katy gets tired of waiting for me to show up at her door with cookies – here is the recipe

Ginger Cookies

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup molasses
1 TBSP baking soda
3 1/2 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 TBSP ground ginger
1/2 TBSP grated fresh ginger
1/4 tsp salt

Melt butter and shortening together, put in a large bowl. Add molasses and baking soda. Stir to combine.

Add flour, sugar, buttermilk, ginger and salt. Stir until blended and becomes a dough.

Form dough into small balls. Place on cookie sheet with space in between. Bake 13 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees. If you prefer a crisper cookie (more like a ginger snap) press the ball of cookie dough out with the palm of your hand or a fork before baking.

St. Patty’s day this Sunday!! Remember to drink responsibly. By which I mean drink something worth drinking and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. Myself?? I’ll be spending the weekend in Prince Edward County where good wine flows like water!

Naan – a flat oval or round white flour bread cooked in a tandoor oven.

Ginkgo – a large shade tree native to China that produces seeds with edible ginkgo nuts.

Robusta – a species of coffee plant that grows beans of the same name.

Gemelli – a type of pasta made of two strands of pasta twisted together in short pieces.

Radicchio - Italian for red leafed chicory. An herb with crisp, slightly bitter leaves.

Daube – a stew of meat, braised in red wine, veg, herbs and spices or the pot in which such a stew is cooked.

Reduction – The action or fact of making a specified thing smaller or less in amount, degree, or size. In cooking it is normally referring to liquid and is achieved through simmering.

NYC soda ban has been rejected… seriously, if I want to drown my sorrows in 50 litres of Pepsi, stand aside.

This is by far the funniest story about a grapefruit I have ever seen:

Laying in bed this morning trying to Jedi mind trick myself into getting up, I heard the coolest thing. Apparently Iron Maiden has just released their own beer! Called Trooper – after one of their songs. It is a British cask and bottle ale from Robinsons Brewery. For more info check here. Iron Maiden happens to be one of my best friends favourite bands… so I’m pretty sure I know what she is getting for her birthday. Or Christmas depending on how long it takes for us to get it in at the LCBO.

But they aren’t the only classic rockers who are getting their own brew. AC/DC is combining German beer and Australian hard rock.

Make up loving KISS has a German beer as well called Destroyer.

And out of Michigan, Kid Rock has his American Bad Ass Beer.

I think it’s pretty cool. Not that we need every rock band lining up to have their own beer. But if the market has room for just one more rock/beer combination I would like to see what David Bowie would come up with. The name alone would be worth purchase.

I feel awful. The truth is that I’ve been feeling pretty run down for the past few months. Not just run down, run over…. by a truck… a garbage truck… who after running me down dropped a leaky smelly bag on my mangled body. So yeah, it has been rough.

The one bright side is that feeling horrid, is a great excuse to spoil yourself. I’m not talking big ticket items, just those little treats that you give yourself because you deserve it! I still remember the day I decided that it was worth the splurge for really great toilet paper. It’s the little things, you know?

Like name brand juice. It just tastes different! No one makes grape juice like Welch’s. Though I’m pretty sure the word juice needs to be put in quotation marks. I’m sure it is mostly juice from fruit – but also some colour and sugar. A whole lot of sugar. Doesn’t matter – that purple stuff is awesome.

And Pascale’s Ice Cream. Local, all natural and the most amazing ice cream ever. My latest conquest was a tub of the Beau’s Beer Milk Chocolate…. you don’t know awesome until you have had this ice cream.

So the question becomes – what should I spoil myself with today? The expensive back pain gel that doesn’t make you smell like an old lady AND works for almost 20 minutes?? Tempting. Or perhaps some really nice tea from a shop in the market. Or something decadent, that you know is horrible for you and the only reason you are eating it is because it makes you happy.

I think I will choose secret option #4 – a combination of all of the above.

Blenny – a small, scaleless fish found in rocky coastal areas and coral reefs.
